Icestock

Icestock '07! Looks like the hippies changed things, even in Antarctica!

Chili cook-off to keep us warm! Each container had their own variety.

Marie,
max capacity is, i believe, around 1079 people. Normally, the population hovers in the 900's. But it is quite variable, with people going to/from New Zealand, South Pole, and field camps everyday. The majority of the population is contracted employees: IT specialists, dishwashers, heavy machine operators, bureaucrats and administrators (TONS of those!), recreation coordinators, barbers, crane operators, journalists, etc. And then there are the grantees, people who are conducting research, which consist of a minority of the population. Basically, McMurdo is a work camp, a drilling town, a staging area and resupply line for research projects.
Hope that sheds some light!
