Open ocean is now visible on the horizon: Ice edge is getting close, about 15 miles out or so. Apparently, that's a day hike for penguins, as Adelie's are starting wander into town. McMurdoites have been hoping for open water, for the ice edge to reach town. Unfortunately, I think thats a pipe dream, its been a cold summer, only a few days above freezing so far.
The first photo is zoomed in closer than the second photo. The left side of the pics is the Trans-Antarctic Mountains, the body of water is the Ross Sea, the bottom right-hand corner is the Ross Ice Shelf, the bulb sticking out of the ice shelf into the Sea is Ross Island, which is half locked in the ice shelf. McMurdo Station and Scott Base are located on the southern Peninsula of the island.
