The Race around the World

One of those traditions unique to the South Pole is the 'Race Around the World'. Each year on Christmas Day, Antarcticans gather for a 5k race that loops around the geographic South Pole. For some, the race is competitive (the winner gets a 'boondoggle' to McMurdo Station, where they will compete in the Mcmurdo Marathon - the South Pole entry in the race usually fares well, as he/ she has trained all season at elevation but races at sea level). For others, it is merely a chance to dress up and go for a jog/ walk. Still others are still partying from the night before and trying to fend off the impending hangover.
Its a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday in uniquely Antarctican fashion. After the race, everyone gathers in the galley for Christmas brunch. Its all about making the most of those precious few days off.

Here I am donning my classic cow suit - I never race in Antarctica without it
